Social Ontology, Power, and Modernity: Empowerment as a Theory of Transformative Change
This episode of Changemaker Q&A is an exciting one- I’m finally ready to share my explanatory framework of empowerment from my doctoral research! After presenting the framework at an international conference (I’ll share the paper here when it’s published), I wanted to share the philosophy/theoretical underpinnings of the framework for anyone who is interested in how/why my research took me in tis direction first. It might seem like women’s empowerment is something that is well-researched, but since empowerment emerged in the development field in the 1970s, it has become somewhat of a buzzword, and we often assume that any efforts that promote gender equality will automatically empower women - but the two are fundamentally different...

    I made a few mini “ollas” by using a terracotta pot and the saucer sold with it. I glued the saucer on and turned it upside down. I filled it through the hole that was originally on the bottom. Curious about not working in grow bags. Do they just dry out too fast? Right now I’m hose watering my grow bags which isn’t great.

    • @jorbinsnoted3579

      I make mini ollas myself using the same method you describe. Works good for smaller pots. As far as fabric grow bags. Watering spikes do work but you must place them closer to the center of the pot and nearer to the plant. The plant will attach roots to the spike and form a mat around it. However, you will find that you will have to fill the bottle regularly and more often as the soil dries faster and you will lose moisture to evaporation. Water hungry pants in grow bags may require more spikes. Bottom watering grow bags tends to be better in hot windy weather and for water loving plants.

      I have grow bags and a customer at my local garden center said to place them on a big saucer. Not only does it add stability, but when the water runs out of the bag, it fills up the tray and the pot can absorb water during the day. I’ve seen some people use wading pools for them. (Just don’t fill the pool with too much water.) I have these spikes but haven’t tried them in the grow bag. I think if they don’t work, it would be because they might fall over. I bet if you put some 3-4 plant stakes (dowels, bamboo, etc) around the terra cotta water spikes to hold up the bottles, they’d work great. (As a side note, I do have these watering spikes in my actual garden and did a test on two lantanas. The one with the spike is much healthier than the one without.) Good luck.

I buried the wicking rope a few inches underground circling the plant. I top off the jugs with water once a week to week and a half and add a bit of water soluble fertilizer. Never top watered them at all so far this year. Only when it rains do they get top watered. Those plants are huge and healthy!

    What is factually correct and morally good cannot be entirely divorced from one another. If someone is deluded and that leads to distress, you need to treat the delusion. If someone's body damaged or otherwise incorrect and that leads to distress, you need to treat the body. If you can determine that one of these situations is impossible then you will also determine that perceived benefits of treatment will eventually cause more harm than good. If both situations are possible then you will need to develop better diagnosis to get the best outcomes. Also, depending on the correct diagnosis you can then look at potential wider societal goods.

    If sex and gender are distinct, woman refers to sex, not gender. To refer to gender, we use the term feminine, which is a bunch of stereotypes that society puts upon people, but which people shouldn't be pressured to follow.

      From my understanding one minor issue with terracotta water spikes is that they may accumulate salt that clogs up the their porous walls. So adding a water soluble fertilizer into them may possible clog up the walls inhibiting the flow of water. Probably best to do more research first, but it sounds like a great idea if it works and doesn’t clog the holes!

    60 000 years of continuous culture is disinformation. A major role in culture is language, however the language family of Pama-Nyungan which covers 90% the current languages traces back to 6000 years ago. The Australian continent also had various waves of migration. So where do you draw the line of a start of a culture. We can all accept that Aboriginal Australians have been here for a long time but when the social justice types start playing with the facts to exaggerate for effect, you lose a lot of people.

    • @HumanitarianChangemakers
      @HumanitarianChangemakers 8 місяців тому

      Hello, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter. The concept of culture and its origins can indeed be complex and multifaceted. When discussing the extensive history of Aboriginal culture, it's essential to consider that while linguistic evidence points to a divergence in language families, this doesn't negate the continuity of cultural practices, traditions, and connections to the land that have persisted for tens of thousands of years. The significance of ‘60,000 years’ is the number that is agreed upon and referenced across current scholarship, which refers to the depth of length of time Indigenous people’s have maintained connection and ongoing custodianship that encompasses a rich oral history, spiritual beliefs, artistic expressions, and social structures that transcend linguistic boundaries. Understanding the nuances of culture in different contexts is important, and discussions around what constitutes culture should aim to appreciate the richness, diversity, and complexity of dynamic Aboriginal cultures.

    • @TheRealStevovo
      @TheRealStevovo 8 місяців тому

      @@HumanitarianChangemakers I don't think anybody is disputing humans have been around a long time on the continent. The claim of 'continuous culture' is the leap of faith but is being thrust forward aggressively. The tribes in tropical Queensland lived vastly different lives to the tribes in the western desert, and would have no connection with each other for thousands of years. There is genetic continuation due to the isolation however to extrapolate that to culture is dubious. The vacuum of evidence due to no written history is being filled with what is currently expedient. It is the scientific honest thing to say "We don't know" instead of drawing a long bow. From my view the great diversity in language and art from different tribes that is being standardised and collectivised for commercial and political reasons. Look at the great diversity of rock paintings across the continent which has now been reduced to dot paintings which was developed in the 1970's with the help of a British art teacher near Alice Springs. Now everywhere the dot painting method is used, wiping out the artist diversity of before. All that swept aside so that a "brand" can be formed.

    This lady seems to be stuck in a kind of cultural kindergarten seen through the lens of a mickey mouse degree awarded after attending a university for 3 years. Why are so many resources and money allocated to 3% of citizens based solely on their particular culture. Why is there no accountability of how those monies are spent and what are the outcomes of these activities. Stop trying to guilt trip the majority 97% of citizens because part of that 3% have not taken responsibility for their own life decisions. Stop treating the 3% as infants with no agency. Stop thinking there is a bottomless pit of taxpayer money and put a more modest cap on spending and all spending must have a rigorous audit and any spending must be based on results. Stop thinking that Aborigines lived in some Arcadian Paradise, and it was the evil coloniser who destroyed their perfect world of perpetual peace, unicorns and honey on tap. Western Civilisation has given them, in reality the potential of a much better life and a certain level of gratitude would be appreciated instead of resentment, envy and sloth which a very small number of aborigines have fallen into and the reason for the current Aboriginal Industry's existence. Equality means treating Aboriginals the same as any other Australian citizen and not like some exotic endangered species which is an insult and extremely patronising to our first Australians. I would have added racist, but this epithet has become so misused it has lost any real meaning and is only now used to shut down any legitament comment about certain protected so-called victims with proscribed amounts of melanin. If you want to find out the truth of this highly enriching Aboriginal Industry............... FOLLOW THE MONEY. (that is why no audits will be allowed)

The majority want an audit of where the billions of dollars are going. The majority want a single cohesive community - no special rules based on race. Canadian here: To be perfectly candid Australians dodged a lethal bullet by voting NO to the amendment. People often look to Canada as some shining light in terms of Aboriginal/Government relations. Nothing can be further from the truth. Every topic of concern that that the 'No' side brought up in your campaign has has become reality. Over the decades Canada has spent hundreds of billions of dollars in terms of infusion to the aboriginal bands in Canada and the same problems that Australia has still remain in Canada. Let me say that again, hundreds of billions of dollars have been dedicated towards directly helping Aboriginal bands in Canada and the results are not to different than they were decades ago. We've gone through direct cash infusions, we've gone through aboriginal self government, we've instituted federally funded Aboriginal institutions (Assembly of First Nations) who's purpose is self created and driven goals for Aboriginals in Canada by Aboriginals and for all intents and purposes its failed and continues to fail. My advice is dont go down this rabbit hole anymore because it never ends.

      The FACT is that with the Australia Act 1986 AU they severed the link between the UK and Aus, cutting us off from the privy council, and removing the ability to change the "constitution", as it can only be changed in the UK Parliament, because it is their Act. This isn't a "quibble", it is FACT at LAW. The whole thing was an attempt to side step Original Sovereignty - Hardly a "Quibble". Any more "detail" you would like to add? @@jeffappleton926

    Most of the Indigenous people got the poke yet their "voice" regarding the amount of tribal deaths and female specific issues directly attributed to the poke remain silent. The debate and vote was just distraction for ignorant white people to feel good about themselves and argue with themselves. Your white-raised traitorous abo spokespeople on the TV do not speak for any tribe. As far as we are concerned, you've declared war with poison and our now reduced descendants will spit on your bones.

    There need's to be a full independent audit of every cent that has been spent over the last two decades, and not just corporations that have taken billions, but the individuals that have gotten rich, people like Pearson.

      KPMG and the other big auditors have overseen the rorting and pillaging of remote communities since the Land Rights Act NT came into force. Mostly white fellas have benefitted, and the black fella's are set up and groomed into corruption. People freaked out about control of the land by the 3% of abOriginal people and Tribes, while in truth it is the billionaire mining magnates - making up 0,000000003% that are really in control. That wealth is being laundered, and no one in this country will be left with anything. The Parliament is entirely captured by corporate interested. Time to get real and tell it like it is.
